Southwest resumes Chicago operations after de-icing breakdown

The plane carrying Southwest Airlines flight #2123 had a fire break out before takeoff at John Wayne Airport in Santa Ana on February 12, 2018.

The flight was carrying 139 passengers and 5 crew members, airport officials tweeted.

Southwest Airlines Co said its operations mostly returned to normal at Chicago Midway Airport on Monday after the breakdown of one of its plane de-icing machines forced the cancellation of some 250 flights on Sunday.

The small fire was quickly extinguished.

Alyssa Eliasen, a spokesperson for the airline, said Southwest had 'actively worked to manage our glycol levels (used to deice aircraft),' but that due to the severity of the winter weather it was forced to cancel the flights.

Midway alerted passengers via Twitter that the airport was still dealing with cancelled flights.

The airline said it "expects to operate a close to normal schedule" on Monday.

The fire - which has since been put out - broke out on Southwest flight #2123, causing its emergency chutes to deploy, according to the airport. The fire was in the aircraft's auxiliary power unit.

The US's third-largest city has recorded measurable snow - when at least 0.1 of an inch occurs - for nine consecutive days between 3 and 11 February, matching a record last set in January 2009.
