Facebook still uncool among teens, report says

The report says that while Facebook has so far been successful in keeping hold of younger users shifting to services such as Instagram, which it bought in 2012 for $1bn, defectors are now increasingly heading to upstart Snapchat.

The company has said that they expect the use of Facebook from ages 12 to 17 to decrease more and more as time goes by. The report specifically mentioned Instagram; predicting a growth of 13 percent in the current year-105 million users to be precise. In total, Facebook is likely to lose around 2 millions users under 25 in the USA this year, and many more if this trend is followed by teens worldwide. But a surprising new report suggests that could soon change if it can't find a way to recruit younger users. Around 5.8% of those in the 18-24 age bracket will leave the platform.

Facebook is fast losing its appeal among the teens with Snapchat emerging the benefactor, a new study by eMarketer has revealed. For 2018, eMarketer predicts the number of total Facebook users in the US will reach 169.5 million, up nearly one per cent from 2017.

"Facebook knew they needed something else in their arsenal to keep the interests of teens and young people, and to a large extent, Instagram has done that", Williamson said. So I don't believe this will be as much of a problem for Snapchat as it continues to be for Facebook.

Snapchat and Facebook-owned Instagram are expected to add more younger U.S. users, eMarketer said. "There are now some early signs that younger social network users are being swayed by Snapchat".

In the United States, though, Instagram is more popular than Snapchat.

Although eMarketer does predict that people in the age range from 18 to 24 will be using Facebook frequently in 2018, a staggering 81.5 percent drop is expected by 2021.

Snapchat will rack up 86.5 million users, this year - an increase of 9.3% compared to 2017. The same trend is expected to continue into 2019 and 2020, with declines in all segments of US users under 25.

Facebook is still adding monthly users but older age groups are mainly responsible for this.

Writer and social media addict.

In December 2017, Mark Zuckerberg announced Facebook would be redesigning its News Feed algorithm to bring users less news and promotional content, and more posts from friends and family. "It just won't be as cool to certain age groups". Facebook is still growing, but it is older generations who are adding these numbers; commercially this is not as attractive.
