Texas Woman Goes to Sleep, Wakes Up with British Accent

But her British accent still lingers to this day, two years after her first symptoms appeared.

This is actually the third time Myers has gone to sleep because of a blinding headache only to wake with a foreign accent.

Michelle Myers, a former Texas beauty queen who's never left the US, sounds like she's from jolly old England. The British accent is the latest in her weird string of voice changes after she fell asleep with a headache, and she's understandably frustrated.

Former beauty queen Michelle Myers, from Buckeye, Arizona now speaks with a London accent - despite having never left the United States. Her medical condition is real and rare.

It's not clear whether Myers suffered a stroke or other brain damage that may have caused her FAS episode, but she does suffer from another condition, called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

"When I was a little girl I used to always go to my mom and say, 'my bones hurt", said Myers. The condition makes skin elastic and joints flexible to the point of dislocation, leading to the rupture of blood vessels, which is why Myers constantly has bruises on her legs. She also likes painting, writing, and motivating people. "Rare diseases are very emotional".

"But doctors aren't sure how exactly the migraines relate to foreign accent syndrome".

Myers's situation is especially peculiar since her accent doesn't sound like a speech disruption-on the contrary, it comes across as quite refined. A headache left her speaking gibberish for a couple of days before her accent shifted.

As for Mrs. Myers, the woman declared that her condition is indeed challenging to live with, but she still maintains her optimism. As she watched a video of herself speaking normally with ABC, she stated that "I'm sad..." She felt like a different person and it took her some time to define her identity. "The person I am now has been through so much compared to this person".

"It's actually quite unsafe", Myers said.

According to experts, she's not insane and not faking it. She's spoken in Irish, Australian, Swedish, Polish, and other dialects since her condition started, and hasn't stopped since. She's been diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome.

"Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological", she said. "People like me - we don't care which one it is", she explained.
