Macron will Keep his Promise of Compulsory Military Service

President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday warned the Syrian regime that France would launch strikes if evidence emerged of its use of banned chemical weapons against civilians.

Some 109 occurred after the 2015 United Nations adoption of Resolution 2209 which condemns any use of chemicals as a weapon in the Syrian Civil War and threatens to use force if chemical weapons are used again in the conflict.

In a telephone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on February 9, Macron said he was "worried about indications suggesting the possible use of chlorine on several occasions against the civilian population in Syria these last few weeks". Last week, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian told local broadcaster BFM TV that "all indications show us today that the Syrian regime is using chlorine gas at the moment".

The French President promised "retaliation and an immediate response from France" if the Syrian regime was found guilty who he said would eventually "be answerable to worldwide justice" for its crimes.

Receiving Putin at Versailles in May 2017, Macron had declared that France would respond immediately to any use of chemical weapons in Syria.

Macron said last May that the use of chemical weapons would represent a "red line".

The government plans to test the plan in 2019. He says a military response is on the table if investigators uncover evidence of a recent sarin attack. Assad has repeatedly denied using chemical weapons, but worldwide organizations have offered convincing evidence to the contrary. The comments came amid unverified reports that pro-government forces have used chlorine on civilians and rebels to gain control of areas.
