Google Launches 'Visually Rich' AMP Stories in Search, Akin to Snapchat Stories

The company today announced an AMP developer preview for Gmail. Today Google said AMP is merely meant to make the mobile web more accessible to developers, claiming small publishers face challenges in building high-performance content.

"AMP stories are built on the technical infrastructure of AMP to provide a fast, handsome experience on the mobile web".

"This new spec will be a powerful way for developers to create more engaging, interactive, and actionable email experiences", Sahney said. The open source AMP framework, which is created to enable blazing-fast and efficient mobile web pages, is now used by 31 million domains.

CernyGoogle, one of the largest search engines on the internet, strives to tell stories with a more flexible layout with its development of the AMP Stories.

Google's AMP stories have the ability to transform quick short mobile magazine format which would be very effective for publishers to work more creatively and to produce easy-to-read articles.

An email from Pinterest for example, would allow you to browse through images and click on them for more details - like how you would on the site - but through the email itself. Emails can also transfer information about flights, events, news, purchases and also many other pieces of information.

Second, since Google is testing out this feature with select content creators, you'll be able to see a search page with options for weather, sports, entertainment and so on. The AMP tech is traditionally used for fast-loading mobile pages; the Gmail integration is its first broader use case. And modernizing email with AMP could have some interesting effects. Like Snapchat or Instagram stories, AMP Stories bring in the same format when delivering news and other updates from online publications. Google has setup a tutorial as well as a documentation to help developers get started in making their own AMP Stories. Considering Google also serves up ads based on the content of your email, any extra information it can get from there is also a potential boon to its bottom line.
