Emily Sweeney Is OK After That Scary Olympic Luge Crash

American female luger Emily Sweeney suffered a horrifying crash during her run. Sweeney was rounding the infamously hard Curve 9 on the track when she began to speed back and forth out of control-at about 60 miles per hour.

"I'm okay", she told reporters.

Sweeney was in her fourth run and in curve 9 when she bounced around the track before crashing. A stretcher was brought out, but after several tense minutes Sweeney was able to get to her feet.

Pyeongchang is Sweeney's first Olympics after missing the Sochi Games in 2014.

Sweeney, 24, had problems with curves 8 and 9 in the course before she crashed, said USA Luge on Facebook. "The crowd was stunned and went silent".

However, despite avoiding serious injury, Sweeney was knocked out of the Games.

Watch Sweeney's crash in the videos below, but please note that some viewers may find the footage distressing.

"Oh no, that's bad, you really hate to see that, where the athlete's feet go higher than her head".

After a brief delay, the competition resumed.

"It's definitely one of the harder curves around the world", Tucker West of the USA told NBC Olympics. She was.412 seconds behind Geisenberger. Germany's Dajana Eitberger grabbed the silver, and Canada's Alex Gough won bronze.

Only 20 women from the original field of 30 advanced to the final two runs.

After the crash, the luge competition was temporarily halted as medical professionals rushed in to check on Emily Sweeney, who was conscious and aware, though still not standing yet.
