Amid political row, Centre releases Rs 1269 cr for Andhra Pradesh projects

"The Congress Party supports the just demands of the people of Andhra Pradesh for special category status and speedy completion of the Polavaram project".

This was decided at an over-two-hour-long joint meeting of Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal and BJP President Amit Shah and Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Y.S. Chowdary in New Delhi on Friday night, according to TDP sources. Congress' KVP Ramachandra Rao walked into the Well of the House holding a banner that read: "Implement Special Category Status, Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, assurance given by PM on 20.02.2014". "Otherwise, we can't believe anything (the Centre says)", TDP MP Jayadev Galla said.

As the political ties between BJP and TDP seem to be deteriorating with each passing day, the centre, over the past few days, has released a grant of Rs 1269 crore under several heads, for the state of Andhra Pradesh.

"Going by the quantum of releases, the projects could take anywhere between a minimum of 10 years to a maximum of 30 for completion".

"Our main concern is about the implementation of the provisions of the AP Reorganisation Act. However, in January, the state government suggested an alternative method and discussion on the alternative method have reached a very advanced stage and a solution is likely to be finalised very soon", he said. Before this grant, the Central government is reported to have released Rs 4,329 crore for the Polavaram project while TDP claims that they have spent more than Rs 7,200 on the project so far.

The target appeared to be the TDP, which has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament, accusing the Narendra Modi government of not fulfilling the promise of financial assistance made to Andhra Pradesh after the bifurcation of the state.

A new port will be sanctioned in place of Dugarajapatnam port.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is fully committed to and honest in implementing the States Reorganisation Act", Hari Babu said.

Interestingly, TDP State president K Kala Venkata Rao, also the state's energy minister, was present by Singh's side but remained silent as the Union minister brushed aside the MPs' agitation.
