Winnipeggers join 'Justice for Colten' movement following not guilty verdict

Boushie, a member of the Red Pheasant Cree Nation, was shot and killed in August 2016 by Gerald Stanley, a white farmer.

Popescul's stern order about court conduct was one of the things the five men and seven women on the jury didn't hear.

The Court of Queen's Bench jury began deliberating Thursday and returned a verdict Friday evening.

"This is a critical moment and we can't accept this injustice".

"Justice for Colten" rallies are planned in cities from Saskatoon to St. John's after the not guilty verdict in the shooting death of Colten Boushie sent shockwaves across the country.

"Colten Boushie was shot in the back of the head at point blank range".

Cameron noted there was promise of a meeting with federal justice minister Jody Wilson-Raybould.

Senior Crown Prosecutor Bill Burge did not rule out an appeal. "The Boushie family's story of how the RCMP officers acted towards them, at their moment of greatest pain, also calls for some questions to be answered", the release said.

"It has been a very difficult year and a half for the Boushie family and our communities and it's now only become harder for our people to bear".

Outside the courthouse, Baptiste said to reporters the justice system has to change to serve First Nations people.

Throughout the trial, Alvin Baptiste, Boushie's uncle, has held an eagle feather inside and outside the courtroom.

The trial heard that Boushie, from the Red Pheasant First Nation, was shot in the head while he was sitting in an SUV that had been driven onto Stanley's farm near Biggar, Sask.

"That ain't no freak accident", said Baptiste.

Neither Spencer nor Stanley commented Friday night.

"It's not us against them", the vice-chief said.

"There's never any victor in a case like this", he told reporters outside the courthouse.

Belinda Jackson, one of the people who was in the SUV with Boushie, initially told police she remembered waking up to see Boushie's girlfriend, Kiora Wuttunee, screaming and saying Boushie had been shot.

Dyck is an Indigenous senator from Saskatchewan, where the trial in Battleford polarized citizens racial views and politicians warned people to react responsibly. "As we await the verdict and wonder what impact this could have on our province, and more importantly, our relations with each other, we must continue to work with each other in a good way, in a respectful way". "And that's why I'm here", said Jolibois, who is a former mayor of La Loche, Sask. "I believe we are going to have feel our way out of it".

"We need to come together and stand up and show the family, Colten's family, that we stand with them and say 'this is not right, '" said Jerilynn Webster, who organized the rally.
