VLC 3.0 exits beta, adds Chromecast support, faster seeking, and more

Unfortunately for some, this functionality is limited to the Android app only, but that includes support for Chromebooks and Samsung's DeX environment.

VLC 3.0 is a long-term support release, and it is compatible with all versions of Windows starting with XP. Video quality while mirroring, from what we have observed, deteriorate.

VLC is one of the rare players capable of playing every other file and format you throw at it.

VLC 3.0 brings Chromecast support and can stream audio and video formats to Chromecast devices. If the media codec you're trying to play is natively supported by the Chromecast, your device will only act as a streaming server.

Supports hardware decoding on all platforms, for HD and UHD of H.264 & H.265 codecs, allowing 4K and 8K decoding with little CPU consumption. Direct3D 11 output also works on Windows RT, Windows Phone, and Windows 10 Mobile. After releasing beta support for Chromecast in v2.5 late last month, they've announced v3.0 is going live with stable Chromecast support and much more.

With 3.0, VLC continues to be supported for an incredible number of platforms. Media files can be dropped on to the VLC icon from other applications and right-clicking the program will open the context menu. VLC for Android is completely free, has no ads and no in-app-purchases. The full list of improvements is available on the VLC announcement page.

There are many other new features as well, such as network browsing for remote file systems, HDMI passthrough for HD audio codes like E-AC3, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD, 360 video and 3D Ambisonic audio support, and a lot more than you can chew on. Its not just bug fixes in this release, there's actually some performance optimisation on offer here, so if you're on an older machine, then playback may be smoother now with this update.
