Kremlin regrets CAS ban on Russian athletes

The games will still include 168 Russians who have been invited as Olympic Athletes from Russia, competing in neutral uniforms under the Olympic flag. Athletes from Russia have been generally banned from the Winter Olympics, but some are appearing as "neutral" athletes, which means they will not be under the Russian flag nor have its anthem played if they win. USADA also approached several National Olympic Committees to garner support for the call in a serious serious breach of the independent process of investigation.

The CAS decision was made just hours before Friday's opening ceremony. Russia's Olympic committee is officially barred from the Games due to a widespread doping controversy, but athletes that the IOC have determined to be clean are participating under the banner of Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation.

The 47 Russian athletes and coaches whose last-minute appeals were overturned by CAS on February 9, included a group of 28 athletes whose lifetime bans for doping had been overturned on February 1 by the same court.

Among those excluded are six-time gold medalist Viktor Ahn, the short track speedskater whose return to his native South Korea for the Olympics had been eagerly anticipated by local fans.

John Coates, the Australian IOC member who also oversees CAS operations, said Tuesday that the 32 had also filed appeals in Swiss courts, but didn't give details.

Another interesting detail contained in the CAS verdict is the revelation that Russian Federation could have entered 40 more athletes here than they have.

The former director of the Moscow anti-doping lab Grigory Rodchenkov - now in exile, fearing for his life and cooperating with investigators - admitted he fine-tuned a muscle-building cocktail of steroids to ensure Russian competitors won medals on home soil.

Any Russians who win late invitations would compete under "Olympic Athletes from Russia" because the Russian team is formally banned for doping at the Sochi Olympics.

The Russian doping controversy saw 43 Olympic medals stripped from both the summer and winter Games between 2002 and 2016.

"We are all Russian patriots, all athletes".

"As for the CAS's decision, we certainly regret it".

Speaking on the eve of the Games in South Korea, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) president Craig Reedie attempted to assuage the concerns of athletes who fear their rivals could dope their way to gold.

Russia's participation has been fiercely debated among athletes and Canada's team was forced to apologise on Thursday after an alleged altercation at the athletes' village. Here you're competing for the USA. "It's a significant ruling, and one which will worry clean athletes". In Russia's case, the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver where it ranked 11th, is said to have triggered the mass cheating.
