Indian Prime Minister Modi arrives in Ramallah for meeting with Abbas

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday arrived in Jordan on the first leg of his four-nation regional trip that will also take him to a first-ever Indian prime ministerial visit to Palestine, besides the UAE and Oman in the Gulf.

India's refusal to back U.S. moves to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital disappointed Tel Aviv but was consistent with its support for the Palestinians.

In the UAE, Modi will meet Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi.

Speaking to journalists in New Delhi, she said the relationship between the two countries has developed from a commercial one to a strategic partnership in critical areas.

While New Delhi's decision to not look at ties with Israel and Palestine through the other's prism may be driven by pragmatism, it has given Palestinian leaders cause for anxiety, regardless of the broad-based bilateral engagement and huge budgetary and monetary support India has been providing. "We enjoy vibrant multi-dimensional ties with the countries here", said Narendra Modi before his departure. Mehmoud Abbas is considered to be soft leader towards Western and Israeli approach towards Palestine considering they will fecilitate establishment of Palestine as independent state.

As Palestine works to establish an worldwide multilateral mechanism of negotiations, the Palestinian leader stated that "India can play a role in this".

His contribution to Palestine is historical.

Vijayvargiya told the media that the Prime Minister drew upon Indian traditions and culture as he spoke on the global issues of terrorism, environment and protectionism.

He will make a historic visit to Palestine, the first by an Indian prime minister.

Modi's visit to Palestine is being seen as an effort to balance warming ties with Israel as India turned to the Jewish state for high-end military equipment.

India was the first non-Arab country to recognise the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) as the legitimate representative of the Palestinian people, in 1974.

India believes in a two-state solution in which both Israel and a future Palestinian state coexist peacefully.

The fourth aspect, according to Bhaskar, is India's continuous support to the Palestinian cause at various global fora.

In a significant gesture, President Mahmoud Abbas conferred Narendra Modi with Grand Collar Honour, which is Palestine's highest honour, in recognition of PM's wise leadership.

The UAE is home to over three million people of Indian origin.

"And in 2016 we laid the foundation stone to establish the Palestine India Techno Park project in Ramallah, and we are also looking forward the establishment of the Institute of Diplomacy that is kindly funded by the Indian Government", he noted.

According to Lior Weintraub, a former diplomat at Israel's embassy in India, Modi's Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ushered in a new era of Israel-India relations.
