Horgan announces minimum wage hike

The hourly minimum wage in B.C. will rise each June for the next four years, hitting $15.20 an hour in 2021.

"Predictability and certainty allows businesses to plan and ensure they are prepared for these changes", he said.

But later on Thursday afternoon, the move was criticized both for being too sudden and too slow.

The BC Federation of Labour said it was pleased to see the increase, but disappointed that it would take several years to enact.

The minimum wage in B.C. was not increased between 2001 and 2010, before rising by $2.25 to $10.25 by 2012.

"But making 500,000 low-paid workers who now make less than $15 wait until June 1, 2021, to climb above poverty wage rates is not fair", Ms. Lanzinger said.

"When low-wage earners have money in their pocket, they don't stock it away in offshore tax havens, they put it right back into the economy", stated Premier Horgan.

BC Federation of Labour president Irene Lanzinger says while achieving a $15 per hour minimum wage is an accomplishment, the wait is too long for B.C.'s impoverished workers.

Iglika Ivanova, a senior economist with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives B.C. office, said the increases could have been made faster but that it's good that the largest increases will happen in the first two years.

"I was hoping for a result that addressed a bit more of the urgency that a lot of minimum wage workers are facing", Thompson told host Gloria Macarenko.

Lanzinger says the next phase in the fair wage process involves exemptions from minimum wage.

"I've been very lucky in that way".

"People who were in domestic violence and they got paid leave", says Hogan.

The government established a commission last October to help with the timing of the minimum wage increase, and it recommended predictable and regular hikes. The NDP government had by 2021, though it initially abandoned that deadline.

The Fair Wages Commission's report to Labour Minister Harry Bains is dated January 17. "I'm thankful for the incredible work done by the members of the Fair Wages Commission, who worked together to come up with a fair path forward". "These people work hard; they should be able to support themselves and their families".

Horgan and Labour Minister Harry Bains are set to make the announcement this morning in North Vancouver.

The premier made the announcement at a Vancouver coffee shop February 8.

Last month, the company to match Ontario's new minimum level, saying it was only fair to pay western staff the same as their eastern counterparts.

This is an increase over the previous $11.35 an hour, that took effect in September of a year ago. This will be increased in stages beginning June 1, when it will rise by $1.30 to $12.65.

The figures in Nunavut and NWT are now $13 and $12.50, respectively.
