Hong Kong bus overturns, killing at least 19 people

The driver of a double-decker bus that toppled over in Hong Kong killing at least 18 people and injuring more than 50 others on Saturday evening has been arrested for unsafe driving, police said.

The accident was the city's deadliest bus incident in almost 15 years.

Photographs of the incident show the bus on its side with the roof torn off. Ten were fighting for their lives in hospital while 15 were in a serious condition.

Speaking to local media, passengers said the bus was going to fast before the crash. "The Club is closely monitoring the situation and considering how it can help".

She told reporters that an independent investigation led by a judge would carried out to establish what caused the crash. "It was like the tyre slipped, and the bus turned". It was really chaotic on the bus.

Police have arrested the driver on suspicion of unsafe driving causing injuries and deaths.

He also called the government to address the issue of many drivers working overly long hours.

The bus was operated by the Kowloon Motor Bus Company (KMB) - the largest franchise in Hong Kong.

While Hong Kong has a well-developed and generally safe public transportation system, fatal bus crashes have persisted.

Saturday's accident appears to be the worst since July 2003, when a double-decker fell off an elevated road after being hit by a lorry, killing 21 people.

The paper reports 37 people were taken to 12 different hospitals and there were efforts to rescue two more people stuck on the bus.
