Cordeiro elected president of US Soccer Federation

Cordeiro elected president of US Soccer Federation

"U.S. Soccer needs to change, transformational change".

In the third round, Cordeiro pulled away, drawing on Carter's support as she fell to 10.6 percent of the vote. The 16-year veteran of the national team reiterated sentiments she'd expressed in a complaint to the United States Olympic Committee, that the federation has patently its objective grow the game at every level.

"Thank you to those of you who have supported me today", Cordeiro said after the vote. They also employ Kathy Carter, one of the leading candidates in the election, and many feel that a win for her would be a win for the status quo in U.S. Soccer, which few fans seem to want. "A vote for either one of them is a vote for the status quo, disunity, discord and more failure". The men's national team did not qualify for this summer's World Cup. Cordeiro and Carter, by virtue of their positions, were seen as establishment candidates and were joined by a host of other voices including former USA men's national team players Eric Wynalda, Kyle Martino and Paul Caliguiri, former US women's team goalkeeper Hope Soloal, Steve Gans and Michael Winograd.

"We can't be here four years from now, realizing we made big mistakes", Solo said.

After more than a decade, the U.S. Soccer Federation is getting a new president. Gulati will retain a role as a member of the USSF board and the Federation Internationale de Football Association executive council, and as chairman of the North American bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

The vice-president of the federation will move into the top role after three rounds of voting with 68.6 percent of the vote saw him win the USSF presidential election, with Soccer United Marketing president Kathy Carter finishing closest runner-up.

Cordeiro's percentage increased each round of the body's first contested election in almost two decades, rising from 36.3 to 41.8 on the second ballot.

The vote was done over three ballots before Cordeiro was able to acquire the majority vote. Under U.S. law, 20 percent of the vote is from the athletes' council while the professional, adult and youth councils have 25.8 percent each. Wynalda finished third with 13.7 percent of the vote, Martino fourth with 8.6 percent, Steve Gans fifth with 4.1 percent and Hope Solo sixth with 1.6 percent.

"I said winning this election is going to be about building a coalition", Cordeiro said. Winograd and Gans bowed out after the second ballot, leaving Wynalda (10.8), Martino (10.2) and Solo (1.5) in the race with Cordeiro and Carter. You need really a coalition of support.

"That's one thing I'm incredibly proud of, the way and the process that we have gone about this from conference calls".
