Olympics Opening Ceremony: Who is U.S. flag bearer Erin Hamlin?

Remsen's Erin Hamlin has been selected as the Team USA flag bearer for the 2018 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony. He's competing in his fifth Olympics this year versus her competing in her fourth; he's won two golds and two silvers at previous Games versus Hamlin never winning higher than bronze. She is the first American to win an Olympic medal in singles luge.

After arriving on Kim Jong-un's personal jet at the South's ultra-modern Incheon International Airport - the North's flagship airline is subject to sanctions - she travelled to Pyeongchang to attend the Games' opening ceremony, where the North and South Korean athletes marched together behind a blue-and-white "unification" flag. Hamlin won a coin toss, which was the predetermined method of picking a victor if all else failed in the athlete-led process.

He wrote "I am an American and when I won the 1000m in 2010 I became the first American to 2-peat in that event". No problem. I can wait until 2022. The vote ended tied at 4-4, which resulted in a coin flip. The next step was a coin toss.

Hamlin, 31, was among eight nominees on the ballot for the flag-bearer role and tied with speed skater Shani Davis before the U.S. Olympic Committee ultimately decided with a coin toss, which caused a stir.

Chicago Olympic champion speedskater Shani Davis ripped into USA officials after he lost out on a bid to lead the US team at the Opening Ceremonies.

Hamlin, meanwhile, will be the fourth luger to serve as USA flag-bearer. The decision as to who will carry the USA flag in the opening ceremony came down to a coin toss - and the results have people in a tizzy.

Davis' tweet provoked a cascade of counter-tweets accusing him of poor sportsmanship, sour grapes, and "playing the race card". But Pyongyang's decision to send a high-level delegation including leader Kim Jong Un's sister to the Olympics has raised hopes in the South for rapprochement.

Hamlin was chosen to be the US flag bearer after a vote by her teammates. However, Davis, who was also one of the finalists, included the hashtag #BlackHistoryMonth2018 in a tweet.

"That always seems to be a really, really big-name person", she said. She plans to retire after the PyeongChang games.

And for the first time in Olympic history the two nations will enter a joint women's ice hockey team under the name Korea represented by the unification flag.
