Facebook is reportedly testing a 'downvote' button

We had heard that Facebook was testing a "Dislike" button, but ultimately Facebook went with "Reactions" which allowed users to convey a variety of emotions to react to posts and comments.

"One of the things we've heard people tell us over and over again is they want a "Dislike" button, because not everything is likeable content", Zhuo said at Fusion's Real Fortune Fair in 2015.

Facebook has finally designed something akin to a "dislike" button after years of campaigning from the social network's users. After that, an additional option will pop up that will let users undo the downvote or select a reason why they downvoted a comment.

Facebook wants to make sure that it is clear that the downvote button isn't a dislike button. This feedback might not be useful for the post publisher but is useful for Facebook.

In case you are wondering if its a "dislike button", its not, at least that is what Facebook is saying.

There is already a "Hide" option in place on Facebook for comments but it is concealed behind the drop-down arrow.

The test is running on 5% of English-speaking Android users in the United States, and is not being tested in groups, public figures, or comments from friends. But what Facebook does with signals about problematic comments could raise new questions about censorship, and its role as a news editor and media company. If their reports are accurate, it appears to allow you to downvote comments you don't like. They tested reaction emojis and now they are part of the standard arsenal and now they are testing another feature which looks like something from Reddit. The "Downvote" button doesn't have a dedicated icon for now as it is simply seen as an option under each comment, as seen in the screenshots.

"That doesn't seem like the kind of community we want to create", Zuckerberg said back then.

That's the official line from Facebook after the company was spotted testing the new feature on some people's accounts on Thursday.
