North Korean leader's sister to come to South for Olympics

"President Moon will meet North Korea's high-level delegation on [Feb.] 10 and have lunch with them", said Blue House Spokesman Kim Eui-kyeom in a televised briefing.

However, since arriving in the region, Pence has taken a more strident tone, saying American "resolve" had not wavered in bringing worldwide pressure against Pyongyang.

On Wednesday, Pence announced Washington would soon impose the "toughest" sanctions yet against the "rogue regime" in North Korea.

Both countries' athletes will march under a unified flag during the opening ceremony on Friday, athletes from the two countries will train together before the Olympics begin and a joint North and South Korean women's ice hockey team will compete during the games.

Iranian and North Korean athletes at the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games will receive Samsung mobile phones, organisers said on Thursday, after Iran summoned South Korea's ambassador over reports its athletes would not get the gifts.

"South Korea and the United States learned that North Korea's military parade started at 11.30am [Seoul time] at Kim Il-sung Square in the capital city", the South's Yonhap news agency said, quoting an unnamed source. In 2016, South Korea's former spy chief said Kim Yo Jong was seen "abusing power", punishing propaganda department executives for "minor mistakes".

Vice President Mike Pence is in East Asia keeping the pressure on North Korea.

North Korea has 22 athletes who will compete in the worldwide sports competition, the two Koreas will walk together under a neutral flag at the opening ceremony.

The North Korean parade comes as talk of a similar demonstration in the heating up.

On Thursday, Mr Pence arrived in Pyeonchang - just 50 miles from the North Korean border - for the Winter Olympics.

"The more North Koreans that can come here and see how successful the South has been, the better", he told reporters. Pence appeared to leave the door open for negotiations earlier this week when he said, "I haven't requested any meeting".

North Korea staged a smaller-than expected military parade on the eve of the Winter Olympics in what some viewed as a provocation to the West.

"Kim's keeping everyone guessing", said researcher Bong Youngshik at Yonsei University's Institute for North Korean Studies in Seoul. His son Otto died shortly after being released from North Korean captivity past year. Warmbier and his wife were among President Donald Trump's guests at the State of the Union last month.

Pence had appeared to be open to possible engagement before landing in Japan on Tuesday, but the United States vice president took a much harsher tone following his meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

"Our forces are ready and our nation is resolved", Pence said in a speech to USA troops at the Yokota Air Base in Japan, as he prepared to fly to South Korea to attend the Winter Olympics. In Japan, Pence watched Japanese troops demonstrate the simulated deployment of Japan's surface-to-air missile defense system, which would attempt to intercept a North Korean missile.
