Jaguar Classic will make 25 new D-Type race cars

Jaguar is yet to confirm a price for its "new" D-Type as of writing, but a 1955 Le Mans-winning example sold at auction for around £16.5 million in 2016.

"The Jaguar D-type is one of the most iconic and handsome competition cars of all time, with an outstanding record in the world's toughest motor races", said Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic director.

The classic auto arm of the famous manufacturer will build 25 "new" D-Types in the original Le Mans specific specification from 1956. Furthermore, clients can choose between two body variants: the 1955 Shortnose or the 1956 Longnose. "And it's just as spectacular today", said Tim Hannig, Jaguar Land Rover Classic Director.

The first prototype model will make its debut at the Salon Rétromobile show in Paris this week. However, only 75 were completed, which is why the period-correct cars are being manufactured now.

Back in the 1950s, the Jaguar D-Type was one of the most successful racecars that was built with one goal: to win Le Mans.

Jaguar is reviving its legendary D-Type more than six decades after production ceased.

The work is being done in Coventry, England, by Jaguar Land Rover Classic, the brand's official source of authentic cars, factory-correct services, restorations and genuine parts.

In fact, Jaguar has already built one.

Jaguar Classic has announced that it will build 25 examples of the iconic endurance racer to complete the originally intended run of 100 cars.

The engineering prototype is the 1956 Longnose, identifiable by its extended hood, characteristic tail fin behind the driver's head, wide-angle cylinder head and quick-change brake calipers.

"Recreating the nine D-type-derived XKSSs was hugely satisfying, and an even bigger technical challenge than the six missing Lightweight E-types, but lessons learned from the XKSS project have given us a head start on the final 25 D-types".

It's the third continuation project to be undertaken by JLR Classic, following the six "missing" Lightweight E-Types in 2014-15 and the aforementioned nine "lost" XKSS vehicles produced from 2017-18.
