Robert Wagner Called Person Of Interest In Natalie Wood Case

After a "48 Hours" report on Saturday detailed new clues in the investigation of actress Natalie Wood's 1981 death, the Los Angeles Sheriffs' Department followed up Monday morning with a press conference explaining the current status of the case.

"For the first time" there are "witness statements that portray a new sequence of events that night", a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement released by CBS.

"We're doing our last shot here, seeing if anybody else comes forward with any information", he said.

Actors and spouses Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner in London on July 1, 1976. Witnesses have said they heard Wood and Wagner arguing the night she went missing.

Witnesses have passed away, as has the original investigator assigned to the case. Those witnesses, he said, helped create "a more articulate timeline" from the time when Wood died.

"Over 100 people came forward" after the department gave a press conference in 2011, and some of those tips were valuable, he said. Later that night, Wood left the boat with Davina and booked them both hotel rooms nearby, but chose to get back on the boat the next day, according to the report. It was really intense and it was so bad, [Captain Dennis Davern] went down to check on them because he was anxious that there was some kind of an assault.

Wood's sister, Lana Wood, told Inside Edition that she doesn't believe Wagner has told investigators the full story about what happened on the boat. "Before it goes quiet".

Investigators claimed Monday that Wagner's version of events from that night "doesn't add up". "We're still trying to figure out what happened". Wood's autopsy revealed fresh bruises that, as Det.

Natalie Wood Investigation

"[The bruises] were probably caused by another person", said Corina. The truth is important and this news isn't a minor thing - I don't have to say how important this is.

Reiterating that Wagner was not a suspect, Lt. Corina said, "We can never force him to talk to us, suspect or not".

The case was recently featured on an episode of "48 Hours".

Wagner's lawyer, Blair Berk, said in 2013 that the actor had nothing to do with Wood's death, the Los Angeles Times reported. "He was the last person with her on the boat, arguing", Corina said of the Hollywood couple.

The central question has always been why Wood, one of the biggest movie stars of the time, would attempt to get in a dingy on her own, in the dark, only wearing pajamas and socks, to head into town after what witnesses describe was a loud fight with Wagner.

Walken told Playboy magazine in 1997 that only Wood knows what happened that night, as she was alone. Other witnesses saw a man and woman arguing on the back of the yacht.

Wagner, 87, has declined to speak to the police since the case re-opened, and is not obligated by law to do so. After two weeks of investigation, her death was ruled an accident. They divorced in April 1962 and re-married in 1972. Wood received her award for Best Television Actress in drama for her part in the mini-series "From Here To Eternity", while Asner received his award for Best Television Actor in a Drama for his part in the series "Lou Grant".
