Manchester United supporters travel in droves to site of Munich air disaster

Past players, squad members, staff and fans gathered at Old Trafford to remember a tragedy that stunned Manchester United and the world. Cabin steward Tom Cable was killed, while co-pilot Captain Kenneth Rayment died in hospital some weeks later as a result of his injuries.

Matt Busby's side were making their way back from a European Cup tie against Serbian side Red Star Belgrade when a stop in Munich was required for the aircraft to be refuelled. The plane had stopped in Germany for refuelling.

"As we accelerated down the runway, something told me we were not going to make it".

"Not only that, the "Babes" made the history of Manchester United, without question".

"You think of the ones who went, you don't think of yourself escaping or not going on the trip", says McGuinness, who was in hospital following a cartilage operation when he heard the bad news.

It is hoped as many as eight of the players who lined up through the schoolboy ranks with him will be there.

He and assistant Jimmy Murphy carefully rebuilt the side, leading them to further league and FA Cup success and then vindicating their foray into Europe to their first European Cup win at Wembley a decade later in 1968.

"There is no doubt that, but for that failed take-off, Manchester United were destined for great things", David Meek, a reporter with the Manchester Evening News said.

The interviewee said he had lost two jobs because of his commitment to following United, and had even put his wedding on hold to watch them play.

But McGuinness, who at the tender age of 31 was handed the unenviable task of managing United after Busby stepped down, says it is a shame that the Busby Babes are lost in time. He recalled the incident and the events after that have defined the club in subsquent years.

Gregg and Sir Bobby Charlton are the only survivors from 1958 who are still alive and the emotion was etched large on their faces, a reminder of the mental scars that persist, at a touching memorial service to commemorate the 60 anniversary of the tragedy at Old Trafford on Wednesday. "Whether on board the plane, or in the aftermath for those and their families and friends, this disaster was life-changing for so many of my good friends".

The Munich air disaster on 6 February, 1958 claimed the lives of 23 people, including some of the best soccer players of their generation - Duncan Edwards, Roger Byrne and Tommy Taylor.
