Frasier star dead at 77

Actor John Mahoney, most famous for his role as Martin Crane on "Frasier", died on Sunday at the age of 77, according to his publicist and news reports. He won a SAG Award and received two Emmy and two Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal.

Mahoney continued to live in IL throughout his career and had appeared in over 30 productions for the Steppenwolf Theatre.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel said in a statement Monday night: "Even as his fame grew through his fantastic work in movies and television, John stayed connected to his artistic home here in Chicago in theaters and as a member of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company".

In 1986, Mahoney won a Tony Award for his work in a production of The House of Blue Leaves.

Born in Blackpool, Lancashire, England, on June 20, 1940, Mahoney moved to the US after visiting his sister who married a USA serviceman during World War II.

Mahoney moved to the U.S. permanently in the late 1950s and served in the U.S. Army for three years. This led him to NY, where he won a Theatre World Award for his role in an off-Broadway production of "Orphans".

Mahoney took the role of Martin Crane, the ex-cop father to Kelsey Grammer and David Hyde Pierce's characters in NBC's sitcom Frasier in 1993.

"I thought, I'm going to [join] more to learn than anything else, to be on stage with John [Malkovich], Laurie Metcalf, Joan Allen, Gary Sinise, Gary Cole and all these wonderful actors that I so admired.I don't know if I would have had a career had I not joined". "We were all blessed to have spent 11 glorious years together". On the big screen, he was in "The American President", "Eight Men Out" "Tin Men", "Moonstruck", "Primal Fear", "Barton Fink" and "Flipped" - with 2007's "Dan in Real Life" starring Steve Carell among his last movie credits.

Mahoney died at the age of 77 in hospice care in Chicago.

Following the end of Frasier, Mahoney continued to appear in films, but returned to Chicago to focus on theatre in the city that he always felt to be home.
