Intel to be Exclusive Supplier of LTE Modems for Apple's New iPhones?

Intel to be Exclusive Supplier of LTE Modems for Apple's New iPhones?

Touching on this point, reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently issued an investor note (obtained by AppleInsider) claiming that Apple's LCD-based edgeless iPhone will be more popular than the company's OLED-based models. Qualcomm was Apple's exclusive supplier of baseband chips until the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, at which time Intel began to take on some of the orders.

According to technology news website 9TO5MAC, KGI said that Intel could meet Apple's technical requirements and offer more competitive prices.

In a detailed note citing extensive channel checks with chip suppliers, brokerage Nomura Instinet said it anticipated that Apple would drop Qualcomm in favor of a handful of other suppliers, as it seeks to reduce materials costs for iPhones.

Apple and Qualcomm are now involved in a legal case in the United States over terms of licensing fees and patent infringements.

There is also a possibility that Apple might ditch both Intel and Qualcomm and start manufacturing its own LTE modems since the company has been slowly dampening the dependency factor on these companies in order to exercise complete autonomy on its products. That means Apple handed over as much as $40 to Qualcomm on an $800 iPhone.

This development is expected to create a lot of pressure on Qualcomm. Baseband chips on an iPhone is where all radio functions which require an antenna are managed. First, its latest XMM 7560 modem supports both GSM and CDMA, meaning that Apple would not need multiple models for different carriers.

The iPhone Xs is expected to sport a 5.8-inch OLED screen and the iPhone Xs Plus a 6.5-inch OLED display. If you want to manufacture a phone that has the ability to send and receive data or one capable of a high-speed internet connection, you more than likely have to get a license from Qualcomm. According to MacRumors, Intel will be the exclusive supplier of modem for all the new iPhones launching later this year.

There's another potential fly in the ointment, which is that Intel may lag behind Qualcomm when it comes to having modems that support 5G networks.

The Apple and Qualcomm feud continues.
