North Korea acquires nuclear tech through Berlin embassy

The agency believes the tech was used for Pyongyang's missile and nuclear programs.

North Korea has been using its embassy in Berlin to procure parts for its missile programme, the head of Germany's BfV domestic intelligence agency told a German broadcaster.

Even though not all activities were taken notice of, several were foiled, the head of the intelligence Hans-Georg Maassen confirmed.

He was speaking for a bombshell expose that is due to air on television on Monday.

"If we find such things, we stop it, but we cannot guarantee that this can be prevented in all cases", Massen said, according to a press release cited by CNN".

He added it could be presumed that parts for North Korea's launch programme were acquired "via other markets or underground buyers had acquired them in Germany". "But we can not guarantee that we spot and block each attempt", said Maassen about acquiring potential weapons parts in Germany in comments released by NDR.

Germany's domestic intelligence agency obtained clues on the technology procurements in 2016 and a year ago, according to an investigation by ARD.

North Korea also reportedly attempted to obtain a monitor that measures gas emissions when chemical weapons are produced. These items were allegedly used for the country's missile program.

The allegations from Germany's domestic intelligence agency follow on the heels of a United Nations report that said Pyongyang has been flouting sanctions.

The German accusations come after the publication last Friday of a United Nations report which says North Korea is flouting sanctions by exporting coal, iron, steel and other banned commodities, earning almost US$200 million (S$264 million) in revenue a year ago.
