Nintendo Switch Tops December US Sales, 3DS Best Sales Month In Years

Nintendo consoles continue to fly off the shelves.

Switch sold more units than in December than any other video game system in the United States, according to video game sales tracker NPD Group, Nintendo announced. For Nintendo, this represents the largest month of hardware sales in the USA since December 2010, when the Wii and DS combined for 4.8m units.

Over the holiday season, shoppers purchased 1.5M Nintendo Switch systems during the five-week reporting period of December.

And that's not the only good news for our favorite gaming company, as the 3DS continues to fly off shelves, selling 750,000 units in December 2017.

In total, Switch, 3DS and SNES Mini sales accounted for over half of all game hardware units moved last month in the United States, with over 2.6 million units sold during the lucrative holiday season. That's a 27 percent increase over the same period in 2016, pushing 3DS hardware sales past 21 million in the U.S., Nintendo said.

It seems like there may still be some room for the Nintendo 3DS after all.

Nintendo's positively received titles that have come out in the past 9 months no doubt had a big effect on the large amount of units sold. Since its launch 10 months ago, Nintendo Switch has sold more than 4.8 million units, making it the fastest-selling home console in USA history.

Additionally, Pokemon Ultra Sun and Moon for Nintendo 3DS finished in 13th and 14th place, respectively.
