'The Gallery' - Cars you probably can't afford at the Detroit auto show

In a discussion with Motor Authority, Ford spokesperson Said Deep said the cherished name is not 100-percent locked in for the electric SUV.

Executive Vice President and President for Global Markets Jim Farley said Ford will streamline its small auto lineup worldwide to help make way for electrified performance vehicles. The automaker has wasted no time in promoting its work on electrified and hybridized powertrains now, but there's no denying that it faces an uphill struggle in the face of both traditional rivals such as Chevrolet, and tech-first upstarts such as Tesla.

But this new investment should result in 40 hybrid and electric vehicles in their lineup by 2022, said Chairman Bill Ford said on Sunday at the Detroit auto show via Reuters.

"This is what's so exciting to us: I see a world where small businesses today, many of them going away, actually come back because the logistics systems, through autonomy, is going to make them competitive", Hackett says.

Meanwhile, at the auto show, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao said on Sunday that the government would review GM's petition to test a fully self-driving vehicle with no manual controls.

The automaker says it is on track to deliver an all-electric SUV that offers at least a 300-mile range in 2020.

The all-electric SUV will be built on a new dedicated EV platform and have a range of 300 miles, while the design and packaging of the model has nearly been signed off. Prototypes will hit the road next year to undergo development testing.

It is a not something the manufacturer has confirmed but rumours are circulating that it could be a surprise release at the Detroit Show. Namely, a pledge that Ford is increasing its investment in electric vehicles to $11bn. The company will begin production of a hybrid version of its popular F-150 truck at a plant in Dearborn, Michigan, in 2020.

The plan was finalised in recent months after an extensive review, a person familiar with the process said.

Well, now that Ford offers the F-150 with a diesel V6, there's a better chance that the full-size truck could catch on in foreign markets given diesel's appeal overseas.

"Part of it is about tougher regulation but also the expectation that electric vehicles will support autonomous driving".

Ford is looking to accelerate its push into the electric vehicle market as it struggles to keep up with rivalsĀ“ efforts.

China, India, France and the United Kingdom all have announced plans to phase out vehicles powered by combustion engines and fossil fuels between 2030 and 2040.
