United States assures Pakistan of no unilateral military action

Trump accused Pakistan of doing nothing to assist in the USA -led war effort in neighboring Afghanistan and of failing to crack down on militants that attack us and Afghan forces across the border.

In the weeks since the Trump administration withheld almost $1 billion in security aid for Pakistan, Washington and Islamabad officials have been working to patch things up and avert a unsafe deterioration in their often troubled relationship.

The army chief was contacted by Centcom Commander Gen Joseph Votel last week and an unnamed Senator to defuse tensions after Trump's New Year Day hostile tweet accusing Pakistan of lying and being deceitful towards the US. US officials allege the lawlessness in the Pakistan border region is to be blamed for the Taliban resurgence, a charge that Pakistani officials deny.

The US General acknowledged the recent actions taken by Pakistan for the hospitality of Afghan refugees and agreed that both countries stand to gain from cooperative engagement.

Bajwa made the comments to Votel earlier this week during a phone call, a spokesman for Pakistan's military said in a statement on Friday.

Gen Joseph Votel ssured Pakistan's Gen Bajwa that the problems in ties between the two countries were temporary; there would be no unilateral action and U.S. wanted cooperation from Islamabad on areas of its concern.

Khan said Pakistan had nothing to do with the violence. The military aid is a suspension and not a cutoff for Pakistan.

"Even the US ambassador", who was summoned for a meeting at Pakistan's Foreign Ministry after Trump's New Year's Day tweets, "didn't have an explanation for the tweet for the first couple of days", the official said. "We're hopeful for future cooperation from Pakistan", Steve Goldstein, US Under Secretary of State said in a statement.

Pakistan has apprised the United States about its serious concerns which need to be addressed for moving forward, according to Radio Pakistan.

In Washington, a senior State Department official expressed hope that the two countries would come to terms and that Pakistan would meet US requests for the handover of captured terrorism suspects. "I don't think we are going to get stability and security in Afghanistan if Pakistan does not contribute positively to that", Envoy Juster said, in his inaugural policy speech on US-India relations here. "So when I read in the paper that aid at the level of $250m or 500 or 900 has been cut, we at least are not aware of that aid".
