Texas MLK Parade Canceled After Protest Threat Hurts Funding

"As we reflect on the life and the contributions of America's greatest champion of racial justice and equality, we realize that no other day brings people together like Monday will do", WATE news anchor Lori Tucker said to the crowd of Blount Countians gathered Friday to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.at the annual MLK Business Luncheon at the Airport Hilton.

"It's definitely really special to be selected to represent Martin Luther King and be able to show my views and reignite his views", said Brent. Day Memorial March will begin at noon at the Boys and Girls Club, 201 Dale Scott Ave., and will proceed to City Hall, 1376 E. Ninth St.

Participants at the rally will include diverse dance groups. In addition, Reverend Cedric Brown, from the Commitment Church in Lindenwold, will speak to students about the significance of service. It is free and open to the public.

The interfaith service at Congregation Beth Emeth was a remembrance of Dr. King which featured music, religious readings, some of his quotes and a reading from one of his sermons.

Now this event is supported by the MLK Unity Group, Trinity United Methodist Church, Second Baptist Church, Rhema Word of FAITH and the Chico Peace & Justice Center.

Both the parade and program were held to not only honor what Martin Luther King Jr. stood for, but also to remind people how far they have come. The keynote speaker will be Congressman A. Donald McEachin. The program's theme is "Intelligence Plus Character: That is the Goal of True Education".

"After the very bad assassination of our great leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who I knew from watching the news with my parents was a great man, I remember it was the first time I saw my dad cry", she said. Day is approaching, local fraternity brothers are honoring high school seniors with scholarships not only for their academics but for their desire to bring about change in our community. "We are proud to continue this tradition, nearly 50 years after his assassination, and we welcome all area residents and students to join us in embracing the need for solidarity".

The MLK Commemorative Service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church, 1301 S. Boston Ave., following an MLK Walk in Peace and Solidarity procession to the church starting at 5:30 p.m.at Seventh Street and Cincinnati Avenue.

Fellowship and light refreshments will be available after the program at the church, 6722 Clark Road.
