Katie Couric Is Ready to Discuss Matt Lauer's Firing from 'Today'

Matt Lauer, seen here in November of 2017 on the set of the Today show in NY, was sacked by NBC after allegations of sexual misconduct.

All of the Today staff who have spoken out since Lauer's firing are unanimous in their shock over the claims of predatoriness.

Over a month after her former morning-show colleague Matt Lauer was accused of sexual misconduct by multiple women, his former Today show co-host Katie Couric has opened up for the first time on her response to the news, saying in an interview that the alleged conduct "was not the Matt we knew". "The accounts I've read and heard have been disturbing, distressing and disorienting and it's completely unacceptable that any woman at the Today show experienced this kind of treatment". Kotb, who had been on the show since 2008, received encouragement from all her fellow anchors and even Lauer himself.

"I've been very, very fortunate", she said, "I've been regaled by stories from so many friends who grew up with me in the business or other arenas who I never imagined had to deal with some of the things they had to deal with".

"I had no idea this was going on during my tenure or after I left", she told People in an interview published on Saturday.

She called Lauer a "kind and generous" colleague who "treated me with respect".

It's still very upsetting. "I really admire the way Savannah (Guthrie) and Hoda (Kotb) and the entire "Today" show staff have handled a very hard situation". "Thanks for your interest", Couric wrote on Instagram. Subsequent reports revealed allegations of harassment and assault.

He apologized afterwards in a groveling statement in which he said "some" of the allegations were "untrue". "You'll find not any phrases to convey my grief and regret the pain I've caused others by actions and words", he explained, in part. "I've been doing a lot of thinking, I've been having a lot of conversations with people, and I've been doing a lot of reporting, to understand what steps can be taken to create a safer work environment for all of us". "The late-night show joke which Couric describes is whether she explained View Everything occurs Live with Andy Cohen in 2012 that Lauer could "pinches me to the buttocks a lot". Repairing the damage will take a lot of time and soul-searching and I'm committed to beginning that effort.
