Hawaii officials mistakenly warn of inbound missile

The second recent blunder in Hawaii's planning for a possible North Korean nuclear attack left islanders shaken after an emergency alert warning of an imminent strike sounded on hundreds of thousands of cellphones.

While the agency tweeted that there was no threat about 10 minutes after the warning, it was not officially rescinded for almost 40 minutes, when a revised alert confirming the "false alarm" reached cellphones.

The official word is human error - with someone clicking the wrong button on a computer.

Some people abandoned cars on the highway and others gathered in the interiors of their homes to wait for what seemed like the inevitable, a blast that would cause widespread death and destruction.

TOUR players, families, fans and officials were part of the larger community who received an alarm at 8:07 a.m. local time on their phones stating "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII". They vowed to ensure it would never happen again.

The state adjutant general, Maj.

The report said in this case, during a test that happens when staffers switch shifts, a staffer accidentally selected a live alert instead of a test alert. State lawmakers announced they would hold a hearing next Friday.

The chair of the US Federal Communications Commission Ajit Pai said there would be a full investigation into the incident.

The backlash from lawmakers was swift.

"This system we have been told to rely upon failed and failed miserably today", said House of Representative speaker Scott Saiki.

The U.S. Senator from Hawaii Brian Schatz tweeted Saturday that there is "nothing more important to Hawaii than professionalizing and fool-proofing this process".

The governor said some sirens went off on Saturday after the false alarm.

According to our partners at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Kolten was eating breakfast at the Hyatt Regency downtown hotel when the alert was sent out, but didn't see the alert till he looked on social media. A mobile alert informing of the false alarm didn't reach cellphones until about 40 minutes later. His wife was at the gym.

"I mean what are you going to do?"

The false alert came amid high global tensions over North Korea's development of ballistic nuclear weapons. But there were problems there, too. At the tourist mecca of Waikiki, the sirens were barely audible, prompting officials to add more sirens there and to reposition ones already in place.

"Here, there is nothing you can do", she said. She awakened her 16-year-old daughter with the news.

Ige said the emergency management agency after the incident ordered a change in its procedures requiring two employees, not just one, to send out such an alert in the future.

"Several of my friends also called me or informed me through the WeChat app after missile alert mistake", said Wu.

"I woke up and saw a missile warning and thought 'no way.' I thought 'No, this is not happening today, '" Malapit said.

"It was a false alarm, but betting a lot of people are shaken", she wrote. "I'm sorry for that pain and confusion that anyone might have experienced". "I, too, am extremely upset about this".
