Uber uses 'panic button' to shield files during police raids

It is said to have "routinely" used the system more than 20 times between spring 2015 until late 2016, in places as far afield as Canada, Brussels and Hong Kong ...

Bloomberg reports Uber has used the system at least two dozen times to lock down equipment in foreign offices to shield files from police raids. According to the report, Uber managers across the globe are trained to page a number that alerts specially-trained staff at the company's headquarters in San Francisco, California.

Uber employees took to calling the program Ripley after Sigourney Weaver's character in the "Alien" movies.

The use of this tool raises questions for Uber simply because there is now a growing list of eyebrow-raising technological tactics the company has employed during its meteoric rise from Bay Area phenomenon to global powerhouse over the past nine years.

Should law enforcement show up to raid any of its offices overseas, managers had been instructed to page a number to warn staff at Uber's San Francisco headquarters, according to a report Thursday by Bloomberg News.

For example, Uber's "Greyball" software identified regulators who were trying to hail a ride in an attempt to collect evidence of local law-breaking.

Separately, Uber is under investigation for its "greyball" software, which was reportedly used to thwart government regulators. Uber then cooperated with a second search warrant and agreed to collect provincial taxes for each ride, Bloomberg said. But as he works to rebrand Uber in the eyes of the public and set the company back on track, he continues to uncover new messes that Kalanick left behind, including regulatory threats to Uber's business overseas, and a major data breach made worse by former employees' efforts to hide it. The company now uses a tool called ULocker that can remotely lock and encrypt devices.

The tax investigators wound up leaving without the company documents they had a warrant to obtain, reported Bloomberg, citing people with knowledge of the event.

We understand why Uber has to be extra careful with their data, considering that they access to the private data of millions of people across the world. She said Uber's guidance to employees bars use of the tool where it isn't legal. "When it comes to government investigations, it's our policy to cooperate with all valid searches and requests for data".
