S.Korea's Moon says denuclearisation 'non-negotiable'

He refuted a Wall Street Journal report that said he was contemplating a strike against North Korea.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday expressed hope for some progress from the talks and said he was open to talking with Kim himself.

The United States has asked South Korea to ensure that North Korean participation in Winter Olympics does not violate the UN Security Council's sanction on Pyongyang.

"At the same time, if we can come up with a very peaceful and very good solution, we're working on it", Trump added.

In a move meant to send a message to the North Korean regime, Vice President Mike Pence will reportedly be leading the USA delegation to the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The two countries announced that they would "resolve problems through dialogue and negotiations" and also hold other various talks in order to improve relations. "North Korea's weapons are only aimed at the United States, not our brethren, China or Russian Federation", diplomat Ri Son-gwon told his counterparts on Tuesday as a means of reassuring South Korean officials.

Trump discussed North Korea in a call Thursday with French President Emmanuel Macron of France. It pursued its banned weapons programmes in defiance of United Nations sanctions, launched missiles it says are capable of reaching the USA, and staged its sixth and most powerful nuclear test. The Trump factor is another unknown: will the US President ease off on nuclear bluster and allow the two Koreas to make peace first?

North Korean officials suggested sending an Olympic delegation of athletes, high-level officials, performers and reporters to the global sporting event and Seoul assured it would meet the North's needs.

During the campaign, Moon advocated for greater engagement with Pyongyang to reduce tensions, and as leader he has had to walk a delicate line between North Korea and the US. So far, North Korea has earned 56 medals in total, 16 of which are gold, according to the BBC.

"The North Korean participation is opportunity for the regime to see the value of ending global isolation by denuclearising", Sarah Sanders told reporters.

The games are scheduled to take place in South Korea in the month of February.

Earlier on Tuesday, Seoul said it was prepared to lift some sanctions temporarily so North Koreans could visit South Korea for the Winter Olympics.

Trump took credit for the talks in a tweet.

The first round of dialogue on mending ties between North and South Korea was held on Tuesday in the border village of Panmunjom.
