Pakistan ends intelligence cooperation with U.S. as aid halts — Global Geopolitical Series

Washington's threat of "direct action" is there and could be used at some future point to demonstrate where the "safe havens" are situated in Pakistan.

Responding to questions, Goldstein said the U.S. has so far not heard from Pakistan on its reported decision to suspend its military and intelligence cooperation with it in retaliation of the Trump administration's decision to freeze all its security assistance.

In an exclusive interview to ARY News's Power Play programme hosted by Arshad Sharif, the DG ISPR said the security forces restored peace in the country after taking effective action against terrorists and they were made a run for it as result of the countrywide anti-terror operations.

Speaking at the Institute of Strategic Studies in Islamabad on Tuesday, Khan said that the United States was using Pakistan as a "scapegoat" for its failures in Afghanistan despite spending billions of dollars in the conflict-torn state.

Pakistan , he said, proposed to Afghanistan a bilateral border control mechanism.

"The Gen Bajwa doctrine will bring a durable peace in the country", he said, adding that cooperation between institutions was vital in the war against terrorism.

Terrorists continue to operate freely inside Pakistan and there is a relationship between terrorist organisations and the establishment, he said.

Pakistan and the United States are not putting on hold channels of communication and keeping them open in a bid to cool the tension created following war of words between the two nations post US President Donald Trump's scathing tweet against Islamabad. The handle Saudi Arabia and the U.A.E. have on Islamabad by reason of Pakistan's expat manpower working there is much more than the leverage of the $300 million blocked by the United States. Pakistan denies these allegations but President Trump has escalated the criticism against Islamabad since he took office.

Giving example of Swat offensive, he said, "It was different due to population there".

He stressed effective border management with Afghanistan to curb terrorist movement.

From the rank and file to the generals, the country had a war-experienced army, he said.

Referring to his conversation with the US Ambassador to Pakistan, Goldstein hoped that Pakistan will join the US in its effort with regard to fight against terrorism.

"We have to track down and eliminate that unseen enemy", he added.
