Mets, Jay Bruce Agree To Three-Year, $39M Deal

Mets, Jay Bruce Agree To Three-Year, $39M Deal

The 31-year-old free agent outfielder is returning to NY, reportedly agreeing to a three-year, $39 million deal to stay with the Mets according to multiple national outlets.

The deal between the Amazins and Bruce is pending physical, according to The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal. Bruce had a rough go at things his first few months in Queens, but redeemed himself in 2017 when he hit 29 homers and drove in 75 runs for the Mets through the first half of the season.

Out of contention, the Mets finally shipped Bruce to the Indians in August for minor league relief pitcher Ryder Ryan.

It looks like big-hitting outfielder Jay Bruce is on his way back to Flushing. They have the potential to form a very productive trio for years to come - if healthy.

Bruce is expected to start alongside Yoenis Cespedes and Michael Conforto.

Bruce also gives the Mets another option at first base, which apparently is needed given their insecurities surrounding youngster Dominic Smith.

The Mets have made a free-agent splash with a familiar face. Santana's three-year, $60 million deal with the Phillies is the largest.

Mets fans have been clamouring for the team to spend some money to improve the club following its fourth-place finish in the NL East. The trade, however, was ultimately nixed by a higher up in the NY organization - likely over concerns regarding Kipnis' contract.

"I'm happy", Mets ace Noah Syndergaard tweeted Wednesday night, with a "wackyBruce" hashtag.

The 30-year-old was dealt to the Mets from the Cincinnati Reds at the trade deadline in 2016. However, he rebounded last season to club 29 homers in 103 games for NY.

The following off-season, many questioned whether the Texas native who had previously spent his entire professional career with the Reds could handle the NY spotlight.

NY began the year with great expectations that were quickly derailed by long-term injuries to Syndergaard, Cespedes and others. He had received interest from the San Francisco Giants on the free-agent market before electing to return to NY. Jerry Crasnick of ESPN was the first to report the news.
