Sydney records hottest day after 80 years

Sydney records hottest day after 80 years

Sydney's temperature record was nearly broken this afternoon - when the mercury hit 47.3 degrees in Penrith, at 3.25pm today.

"Sorry, in our earlier checks we missed a 47.8 degrees C temperature recorded at an old Richmond station (now closed) in 1939".

Arata Amemiya, of The Weather Channel, said: "Although 43C was recorded at Sydney airport yesterday, significantly higher maximum temperatures over 40C were observed in a wide area in southern New South Wales".

For those in Penrith, the heat did not ease at sunset, with temperatures recorded above 30 degrees at around 7.30 pm and humidity as high as 91 percent overnight.

But it later clarified that a previous record holder could be found, more than 80 years back in the history books.

A severe fire danger rating was issued for the greater Sydney regiony, while much of the rest of the state has a "very high" rating.

The Bureau of Meteorology said cooler conditions were expected to reach coastal areas later in the day. Air quality warnings have also been given by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage for excessive ozone levels.

Risky heat is roasting parts of Australia with temperatures that haven't been seen in decades.
