Samsung presents 146-inch modular MicroLED TV aptly called "The Wall"

Samsung presents 146-inch modular MicroLED TV aptly called

The Korean firm is showcasing a 146-inch 4K TV dubbed The Wall at the annual tech industry trade show, which formally kicked off on Monday.

Samsung's The Wall is the world's first modular MicroLED 146-inch TV.

The MicroLED technology means that unlike other oversized TVs, the unit will not require backlighting. It's astoundingly bright, colors are rich and vibrant, and the black levels are indeed inky dark.

In a bid to push consumers to upgrade their television sets, TV makers have been pushing increasingly large screens, some as big as 75 inches or even 80 inches. The "Q" stands for "quantum dots", and the promise this new technology brings is to take the best of both LCD and OLED and put them together.

Meanwhile, South Korea's Samsung has previewed a device called "The Wall". Upscaling is not a new phenomenon - in all likelihood your 4K TV already uses similar methods to make SD and Full HD content look great - but with Samsung's AI technology the company claims that picture processing has never been more efficient or clever.

Samsung, however, said it isn't just about size and insane resolutions, but its new TV is also about technological innovations that can well redefine the entire TV segment as a whole. That sounds a rather nebulous but hopefully we can see more specific details as specific TVs are released.

"At Samsung, we are dedicated to providing consumers with a wide range of cutting-edge screen experiences", said Jonghee Han, President of Visual Display Business at Samsung Electronics.

In the First Look, Samsung as well came up featuring the first QLED TV with 8K AI technology.

Samsung also introduced at CES other screen innovations that will work great with The Wall, including AI technology that upscales standard definition to 8K resolution, as well as Bixby and SmartThings support.

This 8K solution maximizes the viewing experience through several new features. The screen will debut in Korea and the United States mid-2018, with a European launch to follow (expect to hear more of this at IFA 2018).

Samsung says The Wall's bezel-less design will ultimately allow customers to create a TV-sized just for their needs.
