Apple's Safari update protects devices from Spectre flaw

Apple's Safari update protects devices from Spectre flaw

The federal organization says that "fully removing the vulnerability" requires replacing the hardware already embedded in millions of computing devices.

Intel has highlighted its quick response to the exploits, which it learned about past year but only acknowledged on Wednesday after the existence of the Meltdown flaw began to leak through news websites.

On Thursday, Apple confirmed that all Mac systems and iOS devices are affected.

It's important to note that Spectre is being mitigated, not fixed, with these Safari-based workarounds, because it's a problem with modern CPU architecture and not a software issue.

Apple Inc said all Mac computers and iOS devices, like iPhones and iPads, are affected by chip security flaws unearthed this week, but the company stressed there are no known exploits impacting users. In the meantime, criminal actors and nation states could further develop the Spectre vulnerability, making attacks easier to execute.

Meltdown and Spectre security flaws have been found in Intel, AMD, and ARM CPUs, putting most computers and mobile phones at risk. "Intel is committed to responsible disclosure". Tech companies, such as Microsoft, Google, Apple and others, scrambled to issue patches to prevent hackers from taking advantage of the vulnerabilities. Meltdown-specific patches have already released for iOS (11.2), macOS (10.13.2), and tvOS (11.2).

Apple has seen fit to release a macOS High Sierra 10.13.

Microsoft said in a statement Thursday that it is not aware of any of these vulnerabilities being used against its customers. Today the firm has released a trio of security updates aimed at protecting Safari and WebKit against the Spectre attack.

Google said in a blog post Wednesday that its popular web browser Chrome, its cloud services and other applications have been or will soon be updated to protect against the newly disclosed vulnerabilities. To install it go to Settings General Software Update. The good news is there is no bad news yet about hackers having exploited the processor flaws thus far. He now holds the minimum possible while remaining chief executive.
