SpaceX to launch mysterious Zuma payload Sunday

The Zuma mission is a mystery, but it has been identified as a government payload managed by Northrop Grumman, according to Florida Today.

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying the secretive Zuma spacecraft will lift off from the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral Sunday night. Few details have been released about the classified mission, known as Zuma, other than it includes a satellite built by Northrop Grumman Corp.

At one point, when Zuma was scheduled to launch last November, both the NRO satellite and the ISS were on track to fly over Cape Canaveral during or very near Zuma's launch window. Falcon 9 rocket will return to Landing Zone 1 at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.

The payload will be delivered to low Earth orbit, per the mission parameters, but we don't know anything else about its goal, design, or intended mission, because it's all classified.

The Falcon 9 lifted off at 8 p.m. EST (0100 GMT on January 9) from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, on Florida's Space Coast.

Zuma could be a military satellite, an intelligence and reconnaissance satellite, or something unique and experimental.

SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk has promised an exciting maiden flight from Kennedy Space Center.

CEO Elon Musk says the heavy-lift launcher's debut test flight - carrying his own Tesla Roadster sports vehicle into space - is possible from KSC before the end of this month.
