Kane brace fires Tottenham past AFC Wimbledon

Kane brace fires Tottenham past AFC Wimbledon

With Manchester City out of sight at the top of the Premier League and a fearsome Juventus to face in the Champions League next month, Tottenham can ill-afford any complacency this weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino insists they will do all they can to keep Kane in north London and the striker has over four years left on his contract so no doubt it would take well in excess of £150m to tempt them in to a sale.

Kane beat both Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to claim the highest goalscoring tally of previous year - 56 in total - and has attracted the attention of Zinedine Zidane, who will look to replace Karim Benzema at the end of the season. He has already netted 26 in all competitions this season.

Long denied Kane a hat-trick with a firm save on 75 minutes, ahead of a couple of efforts on goal from Son, the best of which was deflected by Adedeji Oshilaja onto the woodwork.

Wimbledon exhausted after that, with Vertonghen adding the third goal from range after robbing Lyle Taylor deep in opposition territory as Spurs saw out the closing stages comfortably.

The League One's side's travelling support were happy to go into the break on level terms, although it was only a matter of time before Tottenham made one of their chances count.

Speaking after Tottenham's 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon in the third round of the FA Cup, Pochettino highlighted the challenge facing every club in the modern game.

AFC Wimbledon, founded in 2002 to replace the existing club that became Milton Keynes Dons and who have worked their way back up through the various leagues, came close to scoring in the first half when Jimmy Abdou's shot hit the bar.

Barry Fuller is in contention to play after an ankle injury, while Cody McDonald (foot) and Jon Meades (hamstring) are both able to feature for the side. We scored then and again quick and the game was over.

A brace from Harry Kane and a goal from Jan Vertonghen sealed a comfortable win for Mauricio Pochettino.

"Liverpool is one of the best clubs in the world and look when Coutinho wants to leave how hard it is to keep your best player".
