Angry travelers fight as flight delays continue at JFK

Angry travelers fight as flight delays continue at JFK

Even before the water main break, the Port Authority issued a statement on Sunday on how the recovery from severe weather had disrupted the airport.

Worldwide flights to Terminal 4 were temporarily suspended and passengers who had already arrived there were diverted to other terminals, according to the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which operates the airport. The FAA said Sunday afternoon that the average flight delay was more than 81 minutes at JFK Airport.

Equipment froze and baggage handling was delayed, which was compounded by staff shortages and heavier than normal passenger loads, the Port Authority said.

In the aftermath of the storm, passengers were kept on planes and waited hours to retrieve luggage as flights were delayed and cancelled, and a backup to get to terminal gates built up.

As of Sunday afternoon, almost 50 flights were cancelled and more than 300 flights were delayed arriving and departing the airport, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Tired travelers faced hours-long waits on the tarmac and additional hours-long waits to retrieve their baggage once they were in the terminal, NBC New York reported.

Because of a snowstorm that slammed the NY metropolitan area Thursday, many passengers at JFK and LaGuardia airports remain stranded from canceled or delayed flights. You have little kids, you have animals. "We're frustrated. We didn't get any sleep and we still don't know where our bags are". No injuries were reported.

The Port Authority said the water pipe break appears to be weather related. Airlines remain in recovery mode, rebooking passengers from canceled flights and reuniting passengers with their luggage.

The New York Port Authority said the problems are due to a surge in flights produced by the rescheduling of flights, WABC reported. Flights later resumed but with delays, it said.
