4 powerlifters killed in Delhi road crash

4 powerlifters killed in Delhi road crash

Two other players including a world champion who bagged the title for India in Moscow a year ago, were injured in the accident.

The mishap took place at around 4 am when the sportsmen were returning to Delhi in their Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire vehicle after attending an athletic meet in Panipat.

Five national-level weightlifters were killed, including a world champion, when the auto in which they were travelling met with an accident in dense fog early on Sunday, police said.

The auto followed through and then hit an electric pole.

Police said the presence of empty liquor bottles in the auto suggests drunken driving, even as adverse weather conditions and dense fog, which had made visibility hard, could have also played a part in the mishap. The report also quoted eyewitnesses as saying that the vehicle toppled several times before coming to a halt.

The four lifters - Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish Roy - were rushed to the Raja Harishchandra Hospital, but were declared "dead on arrival". While another person identified as Rohit (23) suffered minor injuries and is still recuperating at the hospital.

Police have registered a case and ordered investigations to ascertain the actual reason behind the accident. Yadav was driving the silver Swift DZire on a highway leading to Karnal, Haryana, and crashed around 4am, police said.

Such was the impact of the crash that the auto - a Maruti Swift Dzire with registration number DL4CAU 9585 - rolled over several times before coming to a stop.

The injured are undergoing treatment. The deaths have come as huge blow to the families of the deceased.
