FCC Chairman Pai cancels CES appearance

FCC Chairman Pai cancels CES appearance

FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS COMMISSION (FCC) chairman Ajit Pai has cancelled a planned appearance at CES following death threats against himself and his family.

But I can tell you why Ajit Pai cancelled his appearance at CES: he's a coward.

It's not the first threat the chairman has faced in recent months.

Three other FCC commissioners, including the two other Republican members, are still expected to attend. The 2015 rules were created to ensure that all traffic on the internet is treated equally and to prevent broadband and wireless providers from blocking or slowing online content. Under the rules, the FCC was given the authority to regulate Internet service providers (ISPs) such as AT&T, Comcast and Verizon - similar to utilities - subjecting the entities to more government oversight.

The Federal Communications Commission chairman was to debate his decision to overturn net neutrality rules.

A spokesperson for the Consumer Technology Association, which hosts CES, declined to comment.

Net neutrality was the issue back then as well. The CRA gives Congress the power to reverse a federal agency's ruling within 60 legislative days of it being taken.

In response to Deadline's inquiry about the reasons for Pai's cancellation, FCC spokesman Brian Hart confirmed Pai had pulled out, but said via email, "We don't have anything to share at this time".

Fellow FCC commissioners Brendan Carr, Michael O'Rielly and Mignon Clyburn are also still scheduled to appear on a panel at the conference next week.
