What Is Bombogenesis and How Does a 'Bomb Cyclone' Become So Dangerous?

A powerful nor'easter likely will create blizzard conditions along New Hampshire's coast Thursday, with heavy snow and gusty winds beginning early in the morning, forecasters said. Snow also is expected along the coasts of Georgia and SC. The "bomb cyclone", known as a bombogenesis, "occurs when a midlatitude cyclone rapidly intensifies" when "a cold air mass collides with a warm air mass", according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The National Weather Service has issued a blizzard warning for coastal New Hampshire and ME, where up to a foot of snow and winds up to 50 miles per hour are expected.

Not only will the storm bring snow, it's also expected to bring strong winds that could cause down trees and possible power outages.

New York City is experiencing near whiteout conditions.

Areas around Boston were forecast to see about one foot (30 cm) of snow on Thursday, and the National Weather Service predicted a similar amount and wind gusts of up to 55 miles per hour (90 kmph) in New York City.

At Newark Liberty airport in New Jersey, airlines had cancelled 867 flights as of noon Thursday, 73 percent of normal flight activity.

'Bomb cyclone' drops on region

"We can expect a few of these each Fall and Winter along the U.S. East coast but many harmlessly go out to sea or impact Canada".

In Washington D.C., the federal government delayed opening offices on Thursday as blowing snow swirled in the capital.

In the state of Virginia, thousands of customers were without power on Thursday morning.

Parts of Florida reported light snow with temperatures just below freezing. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for all of downstate New York.

The effects of the storm will be felt in the southeastern United States; snow was seen in Tallahasee, Fla., Wednesday morning, the first time the white stuff has fallen there in 28 years, according to The Weather Channel. Three cars on an Amtrak train carrying more than 300 passengers from Miami to NY derailed Wednesday night in snow-covered Savannah, Georgia. Meteorologists call this type of storm system a "weather bomb".
