UIDAI denies any breach or leak of Aadhaar data

The Tribune report said that access to the system was gained within ten minutes by contacting an anonymous number on WhatsApp. However, UIDAI has denied any such report saying that the information of Aadhaar cardholders can not be breached. Initially, the CSCS was entrusted for making Aadhaar cards, but their job was taken over and given to post offices and designated banks in November to avoid security breaches.

India on Thursday began investigating a report that access to its database of the identity details of more than 1 billion citizens was being sold for just Rs 500 on social media, in what could be one of the giant program's biggest security breaches. But the newspaper stood by its story, saying the UIDAI claiming no breach of Aadhaar data "flies in the face of that".

Though the newspaper didn't clarify whether or not they were able to access such sensitive citizen information - previously-mentioned fingerprint or iris scan records - they have claimed that they were able to "get all particulars that an individual may have submitted to the UIDAI (Unique Identification Authority of India)", including names, addresses, photos, etc.

It said the authority maintains complete log and traceability of its search facility and any misuse was traceable.

In a statement issued today, the UIDAI said that UIDAI has given the said search facility for the goal of grievance redressal to the designated personnel and state government officials to help residents only by entering their Aadhaar number/EID. Also, the tracking system obviously never realized that unauthorized people were accessing the data.

According to UIDAI, the grievance redressal search facility gives only limited access to name and other details and has no access to biometric details. "As UIDAI maintains complete log and traceability of the facility, the legal action including lodging of FIR against the persons involved in the instant case is being done". The report added that paying an additional Rs 300 also granted access to software that allowed the printing of Aadhaar cards.

The UIDAI had refuted the reports, calling it "misreporting" and reiterated that the server is secure and confidential information of billions of Indians, safe.

This investigation has managed to uncover a major data breach and an operation that has been running for at least six months.
