Serena Williams withdraws from the 2018 Australian Open

Serena Williams reluctantly pulled out of this year's Australian Open on Friday, the American saying that while she is close to regaining full fitness after giving birth to her first child in September, she is not ready to defend her title. Tiley further pointed out that Serena always want to give her absolute best and that she doesn't head into any event just to compete.

After 11 months off, Williams was defeated 10-5 in a supertiebreaker after she split the first two sets with French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko in an exhibition match at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship. The tennis star, who was eight weeks pregnant with daughter Olympia when she won her seventh Australian Open title a year ago, confirmed that she would not be returning to the court as she "needs more time".

Williams was pregnant when she won at Melbourne Park a year ago, her Open-era record 23rd Grand Slam singles title. After withdrawing from Abu Dhabi and Doha due to a right elbow injury, the former world No. 1 announced, through his official website, that he will play two exhibition tournaments, which will be the decisive and final test to decide whether to play Australian Open. She won in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2015 and 2017.
