First blue supermoon lunar eclipse in 150 years coming in January 31

First blue supermoon lunar eclipse in 150 years coming in January 31

Unfortunately, just looking at the sky on January 31 will not guarantee a view of the lunar eclipse.

Noah Petro - NASA When is the next supermoon?

"The eclipse will take place during the middle of the night, and the Pacific Ocean will be turned toward the moon at the time", wrote skywatching columnist Joe Rao. A total lunar eclipse is observed when the Earth comes between the sun and the moon, causing a shadow to be cast on the lunar surface.

After this year, the next time that a Blue Moon passes through Earth's umbra will be on December 31, 2028, and, after that, on January 31, 2037. However, people in rest of North and Central America will be a bit disappointed as the moonset will play spoilsport.

Each of the night's different events is rare enough. "But it's another great chance to watch the moon".

If you could compare them side by side, most people would see that supermoons really are brighter and slightly bigger than a normal full moon. The moon experiences perigree once per orbit, but that doesn't always coincide with a full moon.

During its orbit, it varies slightly closer (perigee) and farther (apogee) from Earth each month. The second one is marked by a blue moon.

Unfortunately because of the location of the moon when the eclipse is set to occur, not everyone on the planet will be able to see it.

According to NASA, a blue moon happens every two-and-a-half years.

So, the upcoming eclipse on January 31 will be the first total eclipse of a Blue Moon in almost 152 years!

Being the second full moon in the month, it is also referred to as a blue moon.

The last blue moon-blood moon event occurred on March 31, 1866.

What is a total lunar eclipse?

That's a blood moon, a blue moon, and a supermoon all at once.

The total eclipse will begin at 8.51pm and end at 10.08pm, while the partial eclipse will end at 11.11pm.

NASA said: "The moon will lose its brightness and take on an eerie, fainter-than-normal glow from the scant sunlight that makes its way through Earth's atmosphere".
