The restrictions will remain in place until the flu season is over.

The hospital said visitors displaying flu-like symptoms, such as a cough or a runny nose, and those under the age of 18 will not be allowed on patient floors.

A limit of only two people should visit a patient at any one time. To lessen your chance of getting sick this winter - Keep your distance from others if you have cold or flu-like symptoms. Limiting visitors to hospital birthing centers and pediatric units reduces the potential for exposure for this vulnerable population. Earlier this month, the CDC said between 291,000 and 646,000 people worldwide could be expected to die from seasonal influenza-related respiratory illnesses.

San Diego County's Department of Health and Human Services reported 2,227 new flu cases last week compared to a total of 563 lab-confirmed flu cases the week before, almost four-times the amount of cases.

The Department of Health is officially categorizing the flu as geographically widespread. That's up from 84 cases reported during the previous week.

"This increased rate of flu activity is concerning because influenza can be a serious disease for anyone, including children, pregnant women, and previously healthy young adults", said Dr. Burnestine Taylor, Medical Officer for Disease Control and Prevention for the Alabama Department of Public Health.

And even if you do get the flu, a shot can hopefully make it a bit more mild.

More people are reaching for those cough lozenges, over-the-counter medications and tissues as influenza sweeps through the region, and experts say that might get worse after holiday gatherings.

However, public health officials said people sick with the flu should seek help if they develop difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, experience chest pain or severe abdominal pain, suffer sudden dizziness or experience "severe vomiting or vomiting that won't stop".
