Nikki Haley thinks United States athletes could skip the Olympics

"I think that's an inner agency process but ultimately the President would certainly weigh in but again, that's certainly something that he would take into account and probably a number of the stakeholders that would be involved", she added. "We don't ever fear anything, we live our lives", Haley said, as reported by CNN. "We have that, and certainly that's a ideal opportunity for all of them to go and do something they worked so hard for".

"What we will do is make sure that we are taking every precaution possible, to make sure that they are safe".

A senior USA official has cast doubt over whether US athletes will able to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea amid heightened tensions with the North.

On Wednesday, Haley told Fox News that it was an "open question" if the United States would participate in the games.

In related news, Russian Federation this week was banned from attending the Winter Olympics 2018 after "systematic manipulation" of anti-doping rules. "There's an open question", she said. "We have to watch this closely, and it is changing by the day".

But when asked if it's a "done deal" that United States athletes will be able to attend the Olympics, Haley said: "There's an open question".

"We haven't heard anyone saying they aren't coming", said Nancy Park, spokesperson for the Pyeongchang Organizing Committee.

In Pyeongchang, ticket sales have been lagging but Olympic preparations continue unabated.

A spokesperson for NBC, which will broadcast the games in the United States, said the network is monitoring the situation and it now has "no plans to change our preparation for the Games, which are in full swing". "We will make sure that the athletes and the staff are safe when we're in Korea".
