Israeli Army Strikes Targets In Gaza In Response To Rocket Fire

Protests broke out in Gaza and the West Bank and Jerusalem after US President Donald Trump made a decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

"In response to that fire and the projectiles fired at Israel throughout the day that fell short in Gaza, an IDF tank and an [Israel Air Force] aircraft targeted two terror posts in Gaza", the military said in a statement.

Earlier tonight, rocket sirens were heard in the Hof Ashkelon and Sha'ar HaNegev regional councils, as well as the city of Sdreot, when two rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip toward Israel.

"The security forces will continue acting to ensure the safety of civilians in the area", an IDF spokesman said.

The IDF added that they hold Hamas, which governs Gaza but is supposed to hand over control to the Palestinian Authority on Sunday, responsible for any rocket fire emanating from the Strip.

Later in the evening another launch was reported with rockets said to have fallen in open fields in Israeli territory.

In the wake of Trump's announcement world leaders warned of the deterioration of the situation in the region as the Palestinian Hamas movement ruled out the possibility of recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital and urged to launch another Arab intifada - an uprising against Israel.

The launches also come five weeks after the Israeli military destroyed an attack tunnel belonging to the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terrorist group, which crossed into Israel from the Gaza Strip.

Israeli army forces stationed at watchtowers and tanks on the borders with Gaza fired live rounds at tens of Palestinian youth protesting near the borders.

The Palestinians seek the eastern sector of the city as the capital of their future state.
