Arizona Rep. Trent Franks expected to announce resignation

Arizona Congressman Trent Franks is expected to resign, a Republican operative told Fox News on Thursday.

Franks told Roll Call that he will be making an announcement later in the day, but did not elaborate. Notably, Franks neither confirmed nor denied that he was going to resign. Stay with us online, on social media, and on air for further updates.

It's not yet clear why Franks is leaving Congress, but rumors of inappropriate behavior on his part are swirling in Washington.

Franks drew national ire in 2013 when he said, "Incidents of rape resulting in pregnancy are very low" - a remark he later said was taken out of context. On Thursday evening, a group of conservative House Republicans gathered around Franks on the floor and prayed with him.

"If this turns out to be true, there won't be that many people who are surprised", the Arizona Republican said, according to the report.

Trent is now serving his eight term in Congress - he was first elected in 2002.

"As he walked past reporters outside the floor of the House of Representatives, Franks said: "I'll let the statement speak for itself". He is now serving his eighth term in the United States Congress.

The governor is required to establish the date of the primary election within 72 hours of the seat being officially vacated.
