Whistleblower To Dems: Flynn Promised Biz Associate He'd Gut Russia Sanctions

Fired former national security advisor Mike Flynn exalted that a nuclear deal involving Russian Federation was "good to go" just minutes after President Trump took the oath of office, House Oversight panel Democrats said based on a whistleblower's claims.

That's the account a whistleblower told Rep. Elijah Cummings, the ranking Democrat on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, which has been investigating Flynn's role in the project.

But he asked Gowdy to issue a subpoena to the White House for documents related to Flynn, saying that the committee has "credible allegations" that Flynn "sought to manipulate the course of worldwide nuclear policy for the financial gain of his former business partners".

The whistleblower told congressional investigators that Copson boasted that Flynn was "making sure that sanctions would be "ripped up" as one of his first orders of business and that this would allow money to start flowing into the project", an apparent reference to financial sanctions imposed on Russian Federation by the Obama administration, Cummings's letter states. "These grave allegations compel a full, credible, and bipartisan congressional investigation".

Flynn's lawyer did not respond to a request for comment on the latest claims. "I am going to celebrate today", and added, according to the whistleblower: "This is going to make a lot of very wealthy people". On Inauguration Day, according to the whistle-blower, Mr. Flynn texted the former business associate to say that the project was "good to go".

The whistleblower told Democrats that the associate had been informed by Flynn that the project was "good to go" and that the sanctions would be "ripped up".

Reached Wednesday, Flynn's attorney declined to comment.

Flynn had worked as a consultant for ACU Strategic Partners, the group pushing the proposed nuclear deal, in 2015 and 2016.

"This is the best day of my life", Copson told the whistleblower as he described the message from Flynn, Cummings said.

Flynn pleaded guilty to a charge in the criminal investigation into Russian collusion last week. And one of the companies involved in the project covered his travel expenses and wrote him a check for $25,000 for the trip, though it's not clear if Flynn cashed the check. The whistleblower isn't named, but Cummings promised in the letter to share the person's identity with Gowdy if it remains confidential and Gowdy agrees to speak with the whistleblower.

The congressman wrote that the whistleblower was "extremely uncomfortable" with the conversation and left shortly thereafter.

Cummings wrote that Mueller's office had asked him to hold back the information until "they completed certain investigative steps" - which apparently have now been concluded. Flynn, a retired US Army lieutenant general, pleaded guilty in federal court last week to one count of making false statements to the FBI and is now a cooperating witness in special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible coordination between Trump's campaign and Russian intermediaries during the 2016 election.
